If you are planning to chase your kids at an amusement park all day this summer, you need to make sure your feet stay happy. If not, you will not last nearly as long as your children, and your feet will be in a lot of pain. The best way to do this is to take time to get your feet ready before you go. If you do, you will be able keep up with your children throughout your vacation.

Visit a Podiatrist

Visit a podiatrist before the trip to get custom orthotics. These are shoe inserts that are made to fit your feet perfectly. These are much better than the shoe inserts you can purchase over the counter, as these will not fit you completely right.

There are different types of shoe inserts the doctor may suggest, including:

  • Heel liners: You may also hear this type of shoe insert called heel pads. They give you more support in your heels as you walk.
  • Arch supports: This type of shoe insert supports the natural arch in your feet. The doctor will suggest arch supports if you have flat feet, or have feet with low or high arches.
  • Insoles: Insoles will give you extra cushioning and support, and they are usually made from gel, foam, or plastic.

Your podiatrist will send you to an orthotics specialist for the custom orthotics. The specialist will examine your feet to determine the best type of orthotic for you.

Exercise

Take time to exercise your feet before you go on your vacation. You will be glad you did once you are in the middle of your trip. Start out by walking every day. If you are not used to walking or exercising, start out slow, and then progress slowly up to walking as fast as you can. Try walking up and down hills if they are available. If you have steps, walking up and down them gives your feet a great workout. This will not only get your feet in good shape, but walking is also good for the rest of your body.

Besides orthotics and exercising, try to stand up as much as you can before you go. If you are standing in line for something, move to the back of the line. Stand up at home while watching television instead of sitting down. If you work in an office, ask your boss to purchase a stand up desk for you. They may not be willing to do this, but you will never know if you do not ask.
